Hodes seeks help for Gorham historic preservation
GORHAM – As the town prepares for the layoff of 167 workers from the Cascade paper mill in April, one lawmaker is seeking federal help for the historic preservation of some of the town's assets. U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes yesterday wrote to Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne seeking federal historic preservation assistance for the town of Gorham in the wake of the layoff announcement earlier this month by Fraser Papers.
Sununu: United effort needed to save Cascade mill
GORHAM – Saving the Cascade paper mill and preserving the few hundred jobs within it will take a cooperative effort from town hall to Capitol Hill, U.S. Sen. John Sununu said yesterday."There is real opportunity and real challenges as well," Sununu told a small group of local town and union officials yesterday afternoon.
Gov. Lynch tries to reassure worried paper mill workers
GORHAM – Gov. John Lynch addressed workers at the last remaining paper mill in Coos County yesterday, telling them the state will throw every resource it has into keeping the mill alive.
Lynch urges action on Coos County tax credit
CONCORD – A tax credit for new jobs in Coos County is more important than ever with new rounds of paper industry layoffs, Gov. John Lynch told a House panel yesterday. Lynch referred the House Ways and Means Committee to Fraser Papers decision this week to will cut 167 jobs in Gorham. This comes after the closure of Groveton Paperboard, Wausau Paper and the Fraser pulp mill in Berlin.
Laid-off mill workers, Lynch to meet Monday
CONCORD – Gov. John Lynch will travel to Berlin and Gorham Monday to meet with laid off workers from the Fraser Paper Mill.
